Description
The
Magar and Gurung plain Bhangra is a traditional upper-body garment worn by men from these indigenous communities in Nepal. It is typically a simple, handloom cotton blouse-style shirt, secured with ties across the front of the body, often worn as part of a complete traditional dress set.Â
Description
- Material: It is commonly made from handloom cotton, which can be plain or sometimes feature subtle embroidery or patterns.
- Style: The garment (sometimes referred to as bhoto or ghalek) is a top that wraps around the torso and is fastened with ties, fitting close to the body.
- Color: While designs can vary, the “plain” style implies a simple, solid color, contrasting with some of the more vibrantly printed or heavily embroidered versions available for festive occasions.Â
Complete Attire
The plain Bhangra is usually paired with other specific items to form the complete traditional male attire for the Magar and Gurung communities:
- Bottoms: A wrapped cloth called kachhad (similar to a lungi or tamba) is worn around the waist and legs.
- Headwear: A traditional cap, often a black Dhaka Bhadgaule Nepali Topi (with a khukuri badge for the Magar dress), completes the look.
- Outerwear: Sometimes a waist coat or full coat is worn over the bhangra, depending on the occasion or weather.Â
Occasion
This traditional dress set is worn during cultural festivals, special occasions, and community events, reflecting the wearer’s cultural identity and heritage.Â
